Happiness and Compromise

When you get engaged, you need to really take a moment to soak it in.  Not enough is said about taking your time and really figuring out what timeline is best for you and your soon to be spouse. After all, wise men say only fools rush in!

If you are someone who’s had your wedding planned since you were dating or since you were 5 years old, then maybe you already know exactly what you want. That said, styles change, budgets become real and you may need to make tough decisions about what you want vs. what you can achieve or afford. Our advice is to sit down with your new fiancé and think. Think about every part of the wedding. Think about the venue, photographer, DJ, etc. and think about what is the most important to you. Close your eyes and picture your wedding, what is the first thing that you see?

For a lot of us, it’s the venue. The atmosphere, the scenery - it can make or break your vision. This is why we tell our couples to really do a thorough search as to all their options, regardless of budget. See all the places that could fit your vision, and then make an executive decision as to which one is the best one for you. If you decide that the one you really want is just a bit out of your budget, think about what else is very important to you, and weigh your options. If the nagging feeling in your gut is that you want to get married on a vineyard and that’s what you see when you close your eyes, then chances are, that’s what you don’t want to compromise on.

For others, it’s the party. The music, the flow and the MC. We’re talking entertainment. DJ, band or a combination of both? These are the things that people remember. If your goal for your wedding is to throw the best party and dance the night away, maybe you are someone who won’t compromise on the music aspect. We suggest researching different companies as well as what each one offers. Some entertainment companies will have a combination of live music coupled with a band, some even have a Frank Sinatra dinner hour! Think about what you want to enjoy that day the most. If the answer is the party aspect and getting your guests out of their seats, then your first move should be to set a budget after you book your venue for what you are willing to sacrifice for your entertainment aspect to be achieved. Even if that means you have to give up the Pinterest inspired flowers you love, then so be it.

Maybe it’s the videographer. Sometimes, you want to make sure you can relive your day over and over again. Capturing those special moments that you may miss or just being able to replay your vows over and over again. Finding someone who can capture your day in the cinematic way that you envision can be pivotal to making sure you can  sit back, and relax, knowing you can rewatch your favorite day over and over again.

Essentially, you need to make sure that you listen to your gut. We find that if a couple is speaking about a specific aspect of their wedding over and over, we know that it is something they clearly want, even if they can't decide this themselves. Make a list with your hubby over a glass of something to soothe the nerves, and find out what YOU won't compromise on! When the day comes and goes faster than you imagine, you’ll be grateful you listened to your heart, in more ways than one.
